In traditional Japanese zen gardens, sand represents represented water. The wave patters are supposed to represent the ripples from a stone's throw. 

Before guests arrive, a beautiful and intentional pattern will be drawn in the sand to honor the time we will spend together When the guests arrive, they will destroy the pattern with their very presence. But this is not a bad thing. Living int he moment in the key. Do not be so attached to the beautiful design that you can't move around to connect with others.
